Genetic Vulnerability

Studies of schizophrenia have provided support that the disease is substantially heritable. The genetic component of schizophrenia is highly complex possibility involving the presense of certain genes, but also the interactions between specific genes. A study involving the first-degree relatives of people with schizophrenia can provide a greater understanding about the development and course of the disorder.

In conjunction with the other research studies conducted at our lab, the presence of corollary discharge dysfunction in first-degree relatives of people with schizophrenia will help in clarifying the pathophysiological significance of the mechanism as representing an endophenotypic marker of genetic liability for the disorder.
